Bias Calibration – Zero second exposure to calculate the zero point signal level of the detector.
Block – This project has been separated into blocks, each block can be completed separately and does not depend upon the others. Once all blocks are completed then a larger block will be implemented which will join all smaller blocks together.
Calibration – any exposure other than actual science exposures taken to determine the characteristics of the instant.
CCD – Charge Coupled Device, a solid-state light sensitive device, used in digital cameras.
Coude spectrograph – a spectrograph that is floor mounted and is fed telescope light by a series of mirrors.
DAO Instrument Control Environment (DICE) – This is the set of existing programs and GUI’s that permit control of the telescope and instruments.
Declination (Dec) – The angular distance on the sky north or south of the celestial equator.
Direct Imaging – a direct image of the sky, often limited to a specific colour range by the use of colour filters
Exposure – a frame of data (science or guide)
Exposure Meter – a device that counts the rate of light entering the spectrograph.
Flatfield Calibration - An exposure of a continuum source with no significant wavelength features in order to calibrate pixel-to-pixel features of the science detector.
GUI – Graphical User Interface
Guide Camera – CCD camera that reads out continuously to monitor the position in the sky of the telescope.
Middle of the Night – calibrations that will be done at a specified time in the evening.
Object Information File – file that contains information on the objects that are to be viewed on that evening.
Photon Count – A count that indicates the total amount of light that has entered the spectrograph
Photon Count Limit – a maximum count given by the observer of value of count to expose on an object for.
Right Ascension (RA) – the angular distance east/west on the sky.
Sky Background Count – the rate of light from the sky.
Slit of the spectrograph – the entrance aperture of the spectrograph.
Spectroscopy – the dispersion of light (i.e. from a star) into the component colours.
Telescope Control System (TCS) – The system that controls the motions of the telescope.
User Configuration File - file that the user creates that contains configuration information for the nights' observations.
Wavelength Calibration
- Taking an exposure of a light source with known wavelength features to
calibrate the wavelength dispersion on the science detector.
