Numerical Analysis research is devoted to developing and investigating explicit procedures for the computation of mathematical equations, such as those found in ordinary differential equations, numerical linear algebra, and optimization (amongst others). There are a wide variety of applications for these equations: many problems in mechanical and electrical engineering require the solution of ordinary differential equations; computer graphics and data mining make use of solutions to matrices of values as can found in linear algebra equations; and the fast-growing field of computational finance employs many optimization equations (e.g., portfolio management).
