The Computer Science Volunteer Program (CSVP), sponsored by the department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Engineering, is a volunteer organization run by graduate students from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Victoria. Since January 2008, offers free training for people who are 60 years of age or older and have no previous knowledge about computers and the Internet.
Participants learn in four weeks the basic skills for navigating the Internet and using email -allowing them to keep in touch with loved ones and share photos. A practical approach is used for teaching the concepts. The instructor demonstrates what should be done, and the participants practice the concepts. The teaching strategy, which requires no previous knowledge and uses simple language, has been very popular with previous participants.
We are located in the Engineering and Computer Science building, also known as ECS Building.
Any Computer Science student can join our Program, and there are various interesting positions that volunteers can get involved with. These range from administrative positions, such as advertising and communications, to technical (e.g., preparing course material) and teaching positions.
