“The women professors are involved in interesting research, passing their invaluable knowledge to students through their teaching, helping students by spending time with them outside of classes, and guiding students in their academic careers through constant advising. They all have had distinguished careers throughout their lives and they continue to inspire me and many others.”
~ Nazma Panjwani, winner of the 2nd Computer Science Photo Contest
Through this picture, Nazma would like to convey that women are making important contributions in the field of Computer Science. A recent article published by Clayman Institute for Gender Research, talks about how the field of Computer Science consists predominantly of males. The article sheds light on how the first programmers of the ENIAC project were women.
Even today, the programming workforce continues to be male-dominated. UVic Computer Science has one of the largest proportions of female faculty members out of any Computer Science Department in Canada – 12 out of 35 regular faculty are women!
Nazma would like to thank Dr. Daniela Damian, Dr. Ulrike Stege, Dr. Wendy Myrvold, Dr. Yvonne Coady, and Dr. Micaela Serra for being part of her picture. Special thanks also to Dr. Daniel German for suggesting the idea of a photo collage and Jose Barrios for using Photoshop to create the collage.
