Department History

The Department of Computer Science was founded in the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1980. Prior to that Computer Science courses had been offered through the Department of Mathematics since the university's inception in 1963. M.Sc. degrees were first offered in 1971 and a B.Sc. in Computer Science was first offered in 1975.

In 1988, the Department moved from Arts and Science to the new Faculty of Engineering which was formed in 1983. With that move, it joined two other computation intensive departments to complement an information technology based faculty.

The formal Ph.D. program was approved in 1988. The Department moved into a new office building in 1990, and the adjacent laboratory building housing all of the Department's teaching and research labs opened in 1995. The Computer Science Department and the Engineering & Computer Science/Math Co-op and Career Services moved into the new, state-of-the-art, green Engineering/Computer Science Building in May 2006.
